Bitcoin and some of the most popular altcoins have remained more or less steady over the last week. However, despite this, some of the underdog altcoins have outperformed the market giving investors massive returns over the same period.

Let’s discuss some altcoins that have moved investors’ wealth massively. One of the top altcoin performers over the last seven days is Rich Quack (QUACK). The QUACK price rallied more than 216 percent from a weekly low of $0.00000000106 to a high of $0.00000000335. Since then QUACK has retraced partially and is currently trading at $0.000000002524.

QUACK is a native currency of Rich Quack, a community-driven project that seeks to become a multi-chain launch ecosystem and help bring next-generation crypto protocols to life.

Another top-performing altcoin over the last week is PHA which rallied 207 percent from a weekly low of $0.071 to a high of $0.218. PHA is the native asset of the Phala Network, a blockchain project that facilitates massive cloud processing without compromising on data confidentiality. From the weekly high, PHA has also undergone partial retracement and is currently trading at $0.19.

The third altcoin that made significant gains is SingularityNET (AGIX). The AGIX crypto surged more than 188 percent from a seven-day low of $0.042 to a high of $0.121. The AGIX price has, however, dipped significantly from its weekly high. SingularityNET is a project that seeks to become a blockchain-based marketplace for artificial intelligence services. These services could range from individual AI algorithms to standalone AI applications.

Other top altcoin performers

Last week, we at CryptoNewsFlash also reported some of the well-known altcoins that have been on traders’ radars recently. Oracle service provider Chainlink (LINK) is one of the most popular altcoins gathering steam with high accumulation in this bear phase.

Alike the previous bear market cycle of 2018-2019, LINK is outperforming some of the top altcoins currently in the market. The $6-$8 is turning out to be a strong accumulation for LINK. A breakout above $8 could set up LINK for a major price rally.

Similarly, another such altcoin on traders’ radar is Shushiswap (SUSHI) which has shown a strong technical setup while preparing for a major move northwards.

Crypto altcoin GXC is also on traders’ radar. GXC is the native asset of the data economy blockchain GXChain. This is a permissionless blockchain designed to facilitate data storage, uploading,  computation, and exchange for enterprises.

While these altcoins under the radar are making big moves, the world’s largest altcoin Ethereum (ETH) has shown weakness. RippleX, the developer subsidiary of blockchain firm, Ripple, will revamp the design of the XRP ledger sidechains, as revealed in a recent update according to a recent update by Scott Determan, one of Ripple’s software engineers. As widely reported in various media, David Schwartz (Ripple’s CTO) suggested the idea of a federated sidechain in 2021.

This feature will enable XRPL to become a top Ethereum competitor as it would also be able to implement smart contracts. Also, they can unlock more tokenization features. It can be possible to test new features on the XRPL without compromising their functionality because sidechains have a custom set of transactions and validators. Sidechains utilize a feature known as the federator to connect with the mainnet.

However, the «witness» feature will replace the federator under the new proposal. The witness feature brings greater simplicity and gives various services the freedom to act independently and not rely on a shared entity. This new design also solves issues like fee escalation and transition throughput.

Thus, users can specify the fee since the server no longer submits transactions. Since the witness server is simple, developers can easily test new features under the proposal. Also, they can fix several vulnerabilities.

XRPL validators vote on NFT-related proposal

According to Ripple’s Vice President of Operations and Corporate Strategy, Emi Yoshikawa, XRPL validators are voting on an XLS-20 amendment to allow native non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Yoshikawa said, up to 80 percent of the validators must vote in support of the proposal over the next two weeks before the passage of this proposal.

RippleX requested feedback on the proposal from developers last May. Earlier in the year, Ripple’s developer subsidiary issued the NFT-devnet, enabling developers to test various NFT capabilities. RippleX is confident its XRP ledger can support the XLS-20 standard so long the testing is thorough.

The XRPL claims it is perfectly suitable for NFTs since it consumes extremely low energy, charges cheap fees and has a high throughput. In September 2021, Ripple launched a $250 million fund to sponsor creators that released their NFTs on the XRP ledger. The fund onboarded some creators earlier in the year, notably the creator of Michael Jordan’s visual autobiography.

Auctioning and minting are some of the in-built features in the XLS-20 standard that simplify the NFT creation process. Two months ago, Ripple and CrossTower (a Web3 company) partnered to showcase XRPL-built NFTs on CrossTower’s NFT marketplace.

Meanwhile, data from blockchain watchdog, Whale Alert, states that crypto exchange, Kraken, moved 500 million XRP tokens to an unnamed wallet. These tokens, valued at $161.2 million, are the biggest amount received by any wallet since November 2021, when Kraken also moved 300 million XRP tokens to an anonymous wallet. The latest data from Coinmarketcap shows that XRP trades at $0.33 and is up 1.52 percent in the last 24 hours.

However, there hasn’t been any significant shift on their business front. Predominantly, most games as of today follow either one of these two business models:

• Pay-to-Play Model: Under this model, the developers charge players for downloading their games. This model was the industry-best and held dominion until the rise of the free-to-play model.
• Free-to-Play Model: Under this model, the developers do not charge players any fees for downloading their games. Instead, they branched into other revenue streams such as advertisements and in-app purchases like upgrades, special abilities, unique items, and expansion packs.

A common issue that runs through these models is their direct lack of real-world value for players. Though indeed, this industry has successfully minted many new-age millionaires in gamers, the fact remains that a good chunk of their earnings is driven by advertisements/marketing and not the game economy itself. Consequently, most game folks are not fairly compensated for their contribution to the ecosystem. Add to this list the divide created by these models. Wealthy players naturally have the edge over the rest as they are more willing to buy in-game items to boost their performance. This ruins the UX for the other gamers.

Introduction to P2E Games’ Business Models

As the name suggests, P2E games are based on the play-to-earn business model. So essentially, it is about creating a direct source of revenue for gamers contributing to the game by being active on it. At its core, there are two critical value-adds of this:

• Direct Monetary Sources: In the traditional gaming ecosystem, the dominant way for gamers to earn money is via marketing/advertising. Gamers fail to establish a direct monetary relationship with the game ecosystem itself. For example, when streamers play Fortnite, it’s not like Epic Games directly is paying them for their contribution. Instead, it’s the advertisers paying to get their ads on. In the long run, this runs contrary to UX experience. So, P2E games have devised a new model where the ecosystem captures value and transfers it to the players according to their contribution.
• Better UX: A game studio has to spend an astronomical sum on marketing to ensure its visibility amongst players. But a play-to-earn game does not need to do that, as players normally flock to it by word of mouth because of the real-world value on offer. This allows the game studios to allocate more funds toward the game’s development.
• Asset-Ownership for Players: One of the most significant issues with online games is the lack of ownership. Your super rare skin on Valorant is only limited to the game ecosystem. With the help of NFTs, P2E games allow players to own in-game assets in real life and drive monetary value from them. Play-to-earn model provides players ownership over their in-game purchases with the help of NFTs and enables players to generate revenue from these items.

How do you identify games for sustainable revenue?

To understand this, we need to appreciate that P2E games reward their players in native tokens. This opens up a significant vulnerability: token price inflation. If the game starts minting too much of their token without any corresponding increase in value capture, then the token price will considerably decline. This has been the case with many games in the past. Axie Infinity, for example, suffers from this issue a lot. Due to their unsustainable game economics, it becomes challenging for the late entrants into the game to get their footing and make a sustainable living off of it. Such aspects can be improved and taken care of by employing good game economics for the players. This encompasses having a realistic token supply, incorporating NFTs for asset ownership, and locking the value created within the ecosystem.

So to identify P2E games for sustainable revenue, you need to consider the following:

• moderate token supply
• good value capture mechanisms
• mechanisms to circulate value within the system

P2E games are here to stay! At this point, many might be tempted to call it just another crypto Ponzi scheme, but it’s seeing growing interest from various blocks. Krafton, a traditional game studio giant, has expressed interest in launching P2E games on Solana. On top of this, the funding spree for P2E games is in full swing as everybody believes that P2E is the future.

If you’re a gamer, there’s never a better time to start. You can become a pioneer in the P2E model and lead the way. But having said that, you must be wary of the games you go for. The growing crypto economy of Latin America

Some of the big countries in Brazil and Argentina have been facing the problem of high inflation and thus crypto adoption in these countries has been growing. In a fresh development, Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin has once again expressed his resentment towards Ripple’s native crypto XRP. Buterin’s comments came during the discussion of new regulations in Canada that puts certain restrictions on digital assets.

The new regulations put restrictions on one of the largest smart contract platforms, Solana (SOL). Commenting on it, one of the Ethereum community members said that he wouldn’t have bothered if XRP was restricted. Responding to it, Buterin said: «XRP already lost their right to protection when they tried to throw us under the bus as «China-controlled».

In his recent tweet, Buterin also recalled his previous tweet from December 2020, when Ripple called Bitcoin and Ethereum Chinese-controlled.

December 2020 was the time when the U.S. SEC slapped lawsuits on Ripple for their sale of the XRP tokens as unregistered securities. To date, Ripple has been fighting the battle in court with the SEC. There have been multiple hearings this year as crypto experts continue to predict the possible outcome of the case.

Earlier this week, Ripple registered a milestone victory as judge Sarah Netburn allowed Ripple to authenticate seven videos of the speeches by previous SEC employees.

However, over the Canadian regulatory measures, Vitalik Buterin praised Ethereum community member David Hoffman for pushing against new regulatory laws. Buterin said:

Glad to see Ethereum people pushing against regulations that privilege ETH over other legitimate cryptocurrencies.

Ripple’s CTO gives a sharp response

Vitalik Buterin’s comments on XRP certainly didn’t go well with the XRP community who have been patiently waiting over their legal battle with the SEC. Interestingly, Buterin’s comments garnered a sharp response from Ripple CTO David Schwartz.

The Ripple CTO said: «The government should punish projects that disagree with our narrative» seems pretty on brand for ETH. He further went out comparing miners in a PoW system with shareholders of a public listed company. Davis Schwartz noted:

I do think it’s perfectly fair to analogize miners in PoW systems to stockholders in companies. Just as eBay’s stockholders earn from the residual friction between buyers and sellers that eBay does not remove, so do miners in ETH and BTC.

Just as eBay stockholders want to leave as much friction between buyers and sellers as they can because that’s their revenue stream, so do miners in ETH and BTC. That’s part of why they have higher fees than XRPL.

• Bob Mason, a leading crypto analyst has predicted that XRP could face three major resistance levels.

The court case between the US Securities and Exchange Commissions (SEC) and Ripple has taken a new turn after a recent court decision. According to reports, the presiding judge Sarah Netburn approved the motion of the payment giant to serve subpoenas in a bid to ensure that videos of SEC officials’ public remarks are authenticated. 

It is important to note that the SEC launched an objection over the fact that Ripple was attempting to reopen a fact discovery. However, this was dismissed by Judge Sarah Netburn. This means seven SEC officials would be served with two Subpoenas. The current development of the case is very crucial to Ripple as the outcome of the video authentication could have a whole lot of effect on its defense. According to reports, proponents expect a positive outcome from the subpoenas, and this coupled with the Ripples on-demand liquidity platform could cause an XRP price surge.

A recall, that Ripple lawyers recently filed a petition against SEC, accusing them of suppressing and coercing the company. 

In a tweet, pro-Ripple lawyer Jeremy Hogan clarified that authentication is a major thing in litigation, and should not be hindered.

Ripple simply wants to authenticate 7 videos of SEC employees giving speeches and the SEC is messing around AGAIN with it (the SEC played games in responding originally last year). Authentication is standard stuff in litigation and should not be this difficult.

Former SEC commissioner’s remark could favor Ripple

Hogan also urged the court to pay attention to a comment made by Robert Jackson, the former SEC commissioner.

In January, Jackson was quoted in a Forbes article claiming that the SEC deliberately avoided clarity on the direction of the status of digital assets as securities.

Bob Mason, a leading crypto analyst has predicted a rally of $0.41 for XRP. However, he believes that the asset could face three major resistance levels. In his analysis, Mason mentioned that the first resistance level is $0.3871, the second is $0.3986, and the third is $0.4167. In this case, the bullish outlook would be invalidated if the price fails to break the second resistance level and falls to $0.3443. 

Rudy Fares, a crypto analyst also observed that the XRP price has for long consolidated between $0.3 to $0.4. This is an indication that the price is undervalued and has lagged compared to the likes of Matic. Fares, however, believes that this could change when XRP goes past $0.4.

According to him, the price would surge and catch up with other altcoins. XRP has been struggling to bounce back after several crypto exchanges delisted it pending the court outcome.

Over the last weekend, the Acala Network witnessed a major depeg of its aUSD stablecoin which dropped to a low of $0.58. This happened as the hackers flooded more than $1.2 billion worth of aUSD stablecoins in the network.

Acala was quick to take notice of the matter and pause all network operations. In a quick message, Polkadot’s DeFi hub Acala wrote:

We have noticed a configuration issue of the Honzon protocol which affects aUSD. We are passing an urgent vote to pause operations on Acala, while we investigate and mitigate the issue.

After a detailed investigation, the Acala team found that there was some issue with the misconfiguration of the IBTC/aUSD liquidity pool. The hacker exploited this bug which resulted in the minting of $1.2 billion worth of aUSD stablecoins.

As a result, the stablecoin started to depeg in a major way which forced the Acala team to immediately freeze the erroneously minted tokens and thus pushing the network into a maintenance mode. However, this also led to the halt of other features on the Acala Network such as swaps and xcm, the cross-chain communications on Polkadot. Besides, Acala has also halted the oracle pallet price feeds until “further notice”.

Acala rectifies the issue

In response, Acala noted that they have rectified the misconfigurations and wallet addresses which have erroneously minted aUSD. Acala wrote:

Based on preliminary on-chain tracing, 99%+ of the errorneously minted aUSD remain on Acala parachain with a small proportion of errorneously minted aUSD being swapped for ACA and other tokens on Acala parachain.

Acala has said that it will continue with the on-chain activity trace and share the results with the community. This will helps towards a community-driven proposal and decision-making to resolve the erroneous minting of aUSD and restore the USD peg.

After dropping a lot on Sunday, the Dollar peg for Acala has recovered to an extent. Currently, as of press time, aUSD is trading at 90 cents.

How can Acala control a DeFi hub?

The recent action by Acala has also sparked the debate about the decentralization of the Acala network. Acala serves as a decentralized finance (DeFi) hub that issues the aUSD stablecoin on the Polkadot blockchain network.

The aUSD has been a crypto-backed stablecoin that according to Acala is censorship-resistant. As Acala managed to freeze the protocol so swiftly, the community members questioned Acala’s claims of aUSD being censorship-resistant.
